Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of targeted operating room nursing combined with psychological intervention on postoperative complications and mental health in athlete patients undergoing breast cancer surgery. Methods: This study involved 100 athlete patients scheduled for elective radical mastectomy at our institution from October 2020 to October 2022. Using a random number table, patients were divided into two groups: a control group of 50 receiving standard care, and an observation group of 50 receiving both specialized surgical nursing and psychological interventions. Outcomes measured included complication rates, anxiety and depression levels using the Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), quality of life via the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy–Breast (FACT-B), and patient satisfaction with nursing care. Results: The observation group experienced significantly fewer complications (6.0%) compared to the control group (22.0%, P<0.05). Both groups saw reductions in SAS and SDS scores post-intervention, but the reductions were more pronounced in the observation group (P><0.05). Quality of life improvements were significant in both groups post-nursing, with the observation group outperforming the control group (P><0.05). Additionally, 96.0% of patients in the observation group reported higher satisfaction with nursing care, compared to 84.0% in the control group (P><0.05). Both groups saw reductions in SAS and SDS scores post-intervention, but the reductions were more pronounced in the observation group (P<0.05). Quality of life improvements were significant in both groups post-nursing, with the observation group outperforming the control group (P<0.05). Additionally, 96.0% of patients in the observation group reported higher satisfaction with nursing care, compared to 84.0% in the control group (P<0.05). Conclusion: For athletes undergoing breast cancer surgery, targeted operating room nursing coupled with psychological interventions can significantly reduce complications, enhance mental health, and improve overall quality of life and satisfaction with care. These findings underscore the value of integrating specialized nursing and psychological support into the perioperative care of athlete patients, contributing to optimal recovery and return to sport.
