Abstract

As diabetes prevalence escalates globally, diabetic kidney disease (DKD) emerges as a significant complication, particularly impacting the health and performance of athletes. The pathogenesis of DKD encompasses a variety of molecular mechanisms that complicate its management, especially in individuals subjected to the physical demands of sports. Despite advancements in clinical treatments, many patients, including those who are athletes, progress to end-stage renal disease. This review focuses on the unique challenges and therapeutic strategies for managing DKD in the athletic population. By exploring the specific pathogenesis and adaptations in treatment approaches tailored to athletes, this paper aims to provide insights that help maintain not only kidney health but also athletic performance in individuals suffering from diabetes.
