Abstract

Purpose: This study investigates the evolution of oil painting art in Southwest China since 2010, a period marked by rapid urbanization and significant socio-economic changes. The research aims to understand how transformations in artistic expression and values reflected in these artworks correlate with shifts in societal norms and behaviors, particularly among athletes, who often embody and influence cultural identity. Methods: The study involves a qualitative analysis of representative oil paintings from Southwest China produced since 2010. Artworks were selected based on their cultural significance and the visibility of their influence on contemporary values. Each piece was analyzed to decode thematic content, stylistic evolution, and value representation. The interpretations aim to uncover the nuanced relationship between these cultural artifacts and the broader shifts in societal attitudes, with a specific focus on how these changes resonate within the athletic community. Results: Preliminary findings indicate that oil paintings from Southwest China have increasingly engaged with themes of modernity, identity, and resilience—values that resonate deeply within athletic circles. The evolution in artistic styles and narratives reflects a broader societal embrace of diversity and dynamism, mirroring the changing landscape of athletic pursuits in terms of inclusivity and the pursuit of excellence. Furthermore, the shift towards more expressive and varied artistic expressions parallels the growing complexity and multidimensionality of athlete identities in the modern era. Conclusion: The transformation in the expression and valuation of oil painting in Southwest China since 2010 offers insightful reflections on broader cultural shifts. For athletes, these artworks not only mirror their evolving societal roles but also offer a medium through which their own experiences and identities can be explored and expressed. Understanding these cultural dynamics is essential for appreciating the interplay between art and athleticism, providing a richer context for the development of sports cultures and the role of athletes as cultural icons. Future research should consider longitudinal studies to track these trends and their impacts on the sports community, potentially guiding culturally aware practices in sports management and athlete representation.
