Abstract

The term ‘Metaverse’ has rapidly emerged after the COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with the revitalization of the economic ecosystem in the virtual world and the development of IT technology. In the rapidly advancing Metaverse era, recent studies, encompassing analyses of popular content and successful cases, underscore the importance of investigating how societal perceptions of Metaverse issues were established and the key social issues that emerged in this context. This study was conducted to identify and analyse the online news big data gathered from the three leading portal sites in South Korea through the text mining technology of the semantic network. Results of the study showed that relevant government ministries, departments, and agencies need to cooperate so that Metaverse-related start-ups, small and medium-sized enterprises, universities, and research institutes can be activated altogether. Second, Metaverse companies need to focus on creating killer content along with the development of 5G-based hardware and software. This study is expected to be used as a reference in preparation for the future Metaverse era and the plan for its sustainable growth.
