Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of a PERMA-based clinical care model in managing psychological distress among athletes diagnosed with advanced lung cancer. Methods: This study explores the application of the PERMA model, which emphasizes Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning, and Accomplishment, in the clinical care of athletes undergoing treatment for advanced lung cancer. Given their unique psychological needs and the high stress associated with both their sports careers and cancer diagnosis, a tailored clinical care model was implemented. Participants included athletes with advanced lung cancer, who were observed over a period of chemotherapy treatment. Key indicators measured included changes in psychological states, levels of anxiety, immune system function, and overall well-being. Results: Athletes treated under the PERMA-based care model showed significant improvements in their psychological state, with reduced anxiety levels and enhanced emotional well-being compared to those receiving standard care. The model facilitated better engagement with treatment, improved relationships with caregivers and family, instilled a sense of meaning and purpose despite the diagnosis, and helped maintain a focus on personal achievement and goals. Additionally, there was a noticeable stabilization in immune function, which is often compromised in patients undergoing intensive cancer treatment. Conclusion: Implementing a PERMA-based clinical care model for athletes with advanced lung cancer can significantly alleviate psychological distress and improve overall well-being during the demanding treatment phase. This approach not only addresses the emotional and psychological needs unique to athletes but also contributes to better clinical outcomes by fostering a more positive and resilient mindset. The findings advocate for the integration of comprehensive psychological and emotional support mechanisms into the treatment protocols for athletes facing serious health challenges, ensuring a holistic approach to care that supports both recovery and mental health.
